In April the article ‘Sprookjes in batik, Motieven ut een Nederlands kinderboek op Javaanse sarongs’, fairy tales in Batik, motifs from a Dutch children’s book on Javanese sarongs, for the Bibliotheek blad (Library magazine), came out, that I wrote together with Karin Vingerhoets, collection specialist Children’s books (and I think also on Crafts) at KB.
We share about how fairytales were depicted on Javanese Batiks and specially how Dutch designer Wilhelmina Drupsteen (1880-1966) version of Snow White from 1906 was transformed into a Batik by Indo-European batik entrepreneur Wilhelmina Beer (1844-1908) before 1908.

Photographed the magazine on top of a tea towel I bought in Singapore at the National Museum of Singapore giftshop with their Snow white batik from the collection changed in neon colours. In the article photos of batiks from the Wereldmuseum & Vlisco archive and illustrations from the book in the KB collection.
The article is published in Dutch, send me an email if you like to receive a PDF of the article!
